The Cold Hardy Prickly Pear is a low-growing cactus perfect for full sun and well-drained soils. Its flat, fleshy pads are covered with tiny barbs and its vibrant blossoms are followed by edible red fruit. The plant is highly versatile - pads and seeds can be eaten and various parts can be used for medicinal purposes. bright yellow flowers two to three inches wide, sometimes with peach-colored centers. Opuntia humifusa plants have sharp bristles and edible fruits that turn reddish purple. Pads dry up and appear dead in winter before reviving in spring.
Origin: US Native
Also known as Low Prickly Pear, this perennial cactus can reach heights of 6 to 12 feet and thrives in full sun or part shade. For optimal germination, plant in the fall or cold stratify for 2-3 months and sow just below the surface in 70F soil.
