(Asian Vegetable) Buag Ngu,or Naga ,

Grow an Extra Long Snake Gourd with Non-GMO Vegetable Seeds. This annual, open-pollinated heirloom brings both unique flavor and beauty to your vegetable patch. Also called edible bottle gourds, dudi, white-flowered gourds, Mao gua, and po gwa, the long, smooth-skinned gourds are used in Chinese cuisine for soups and stir-fries. Whether for cooking, decorating, or educational purposes, these versatile gourds have a place in any vegetable garden.

Culinary tips: Use in curries. The shoots, tendrils and leaves can also be eaten as greens

Snake gourd seeds are considered difficult to germinate.  We recommend filing the sides of the seed coat with a nail file and soaking the seed in warm water overnight before sowing 1/2 in deep.

Cultivation: Requires a long, warm growing season. Prepare fertile, well drained soil. Sow seeds in spring/early summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. The seed coat is hard and should be soaked in warm water for 24 hours or lightly scarified before sowing. Hill planting: Form soil into a 1-ft. diameter mound 3-4' tall. Space mounds 4-6' apart. On each mound plant 1-2 seeds. Row planting: See spacing info in chart. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Train to climb a vertical support for better air circulation, straighter fruit and ease of harvest. Snake gourd flowers during daylight hours. May need hand pollination to set fruit Harvest young tender fruit before it matures to retain its tenderness.
