Salvia Horminum Clary, also known as Blue Salvia, is an annual herb with vibrant violet-blue flowers that bloom in the summer and fall. It is a low-maintenance plant perfect for borders, containers, and mass plantings. Salvia seeds are easy to grow and will provide long-lasting color from summer to fall. This annual plant is native to a wide region spanning from the Mediterranean to Iran and the Crimea.
Clary Sage, a member of the mint family, is a 2-year biennial plant. Its green leaves and white flowers make it a beautiful addition to any herb garden. Grow it easily from seeds with weekly watering and winter protection for optimal results.
Sowing: Sow in late summer to early winter for flowering in spring the following year.
Salvia sclarea is a biennial plant and like all biennials, seeds are generally sown in early summer, the young plants develop their first leaves and a good root system by the winter. In the coldest months they die down and return with a vengeance in spring ready to put on a first rate flower show
Sowing indoors:
Surface sow in pots or containers containing good quality seed compost (John Innes or similar) Cover with a fine thin layer of compost or vermiculite.
The compost should be kept moist but not wet at all times. Seed germinate in seven to 10 days at 20°C (68°F).
Prick out each seedling as it becomes large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost.
The Clary Sage plant has been known as a medicinal herb since the ancient Greeks. Clary herb essential oil is used to treat inflammation, anxiety, PMS and hot flashes. The oils are still used today as a stabilizing agent in the manufacturing of perfumes and soaps as well as a flavoring for alcoholic beverages. Clary is not considered to be much of a culinary herb, but the leaves can be added to salads.
How To Grow Clary Sage From Herb Seed: It is recommended to start Clary seeds indoors 6 weeks before the end of frost season. Transplant the Clary Sage seedlings outdoors into a prepared seedbed once temperatures are warm overnight.
