Tricyrtis LATIFOLLA

  • An outstanding species in many ways: strongly spotted leaves in spring, CLEAN, dark green foliage in summer. One of the earliest to bloom, chartreuse flowers are heavily specked maroon, and all this with a fairly erect habit, meaning non-floppy like some other yellow blooming varieties.

Tricyrtis latifolia is a unique species from Japan and China, typically growing in forests and on forest edges. It is among the first of the toad lilies to flower. Flowers have pale yellow tepals with tiny purple-red spots. Occasionally, many of the upper leaves will also produce flowers. The foliage will spread out at the top to make a nice e clump...a great accent for summer interest in the garden.

      About this genus:

Tricyrtis is a genus of flowering plants in the Lily family (Liliaceae), with approximately eighteen species. The species are commonly known in English as Toad lilies. It has a native range from the Himalayas to eastern Asia, including China, Japan, Philippines and Formosa, and a few species are cultivated for their ornamental qualities in other parts of the world.

A lovely genus, despite the common name, the cultivars we have are easy to grow in any soil that isn't too dry or too wet, and in any situation that isn't deep full shade

This underused ornamental needs partial to full shade and thrives in evenly moist, organic-rich loam. Avoid alkaline and very wet soils. In cold regions a leaf mulch should be placed over the roots during winter; spring sprouting is late to occur. Plant it the dappled shade of woodland settings along with other perennials for shade, such as hosta, foamflower, maidenhair fern and lungwort. It is most impressive when planted in large sweeping masses.

      GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
    • Sow seeds at any time covering them with compost or grit 5mm deep, keeping the seed pot in a cool, well-lit spot outdoors. Artificial heat is not needed and can prevent germination so be very patient as many species will only germinate in the spring after chilling or freezing in the moist seed tray in the winter. Grow on individual seedlings in small pots until of sufficient size to be potted on or planted out into the open ground.

    • Sow from January to March indoors in pots or trays of seed compost.
Sow thinly, cover with a very fine layer of compost.
Cover with glas or clear plastic.
      Keep at +20C.
      Germination time - 28-42 days.
If germination has not started, transfer to refrigerator for 2 weeks before returning to the warmth to trigger germination process.
    • Best sown indoors at 55-65° with NO cover as light aids in germination
    • Seed germination will be erratic and will occur over 30-50 days
    • It is not recommended to sow seeds outdoors
