Cocozelle (also known as Cocozella di Napoli) (Cucurbita pepo)
55 days — Although we harvest the fruits when they are eight to ten inches in length, MM. Vilmorin-Andrieux (1885) stated, "All through Italy . . . the fruit is eaten quite young, when it is hardly the size of a cucumber, sometimes even before the flower has opened, when the ovary, which is scarcely as long or as thick as the finger, is gathered for use. The plants, thus deprived of their undeveloped fruits, continue to flower for several months most profusely . . ."

This Italian heirloom is a garden staple. The plants are bush-type producing long cylindrical zucchini fruit that are dark green striped in lighter green. The flesh is greenish white and firm.

Introduced prior to 1885. An Italian heirloom still widely grown today.Bush type squash with long cylindrical, dark green, zucchini. Cocozelle has very firm greenish-cream colored flesh growing to about 10-12".

TIP: Remember to keep them picked at about the size of a large cucumber and they will just keep coming.

Did You Know? Most of a squash's nutrients are found in the skin.ou know what they say about zucchini, "plant it and stand back." The fast-growing plants are very easy to grow and will continue to produce abundantly through summer if kept picked. Use in soups, salads, and casseroles. Great sliced thin for dips, battered and fried, or in veggie lasagna. Freezes well. Harvest while skins are still tender; pick really small for "baby zucchin

When to sow outside: RECOMMENDED. 2 to 4 weeks after average last frost and when soil temperatures have risen above 60°F.
When to start inside: Not recommended except in very short season climates, 2 to 4 weeks before average last frost. Sow in individual pulp pots that can be planted directly in the ground.
Harvesting: For optimum flavor and quality, harvest at 3" long for “baby” zucchini, and 6" - 8" for all other uses. If allowed to grow 10" - 12" or so, the flesh can be used for breads, but the tough seeds must be discarded.
