Red Bunching onion seeds are highly adaptable to any climate and can be planted in both spring and summer. They are tolerant of bolting during overwintering, making them a top choice for growers and home gardeners. Sporting a red stalk and mild flavor, these seeds produce tender leaves that are perfect for fresh markets or home gardens. While technically perennial, they are commonly grown as annuals or biennials.

This resilient year-round vegetable is well-suited for incorporating into Asian soups, stir-fries, and salads. In Japan, onions are commonly pickled, while in China they are used in staple dishes like rice and noodle dishes, soups, and stir-fries. Single-stemmed varieties are typically planted as annuals and can develop thick, straight shoots similar to leeks. On the other hand, multi-stemmed bunching onions are more similar to scallions, but with a bolder flavor.

This bunching onion, known as Red Beard Japanese, has a maturity rate of 40-50 days and belongs to the Allium fistulosum species. It is a non-GMO, annual, perennial, open-pollinated, heirloom variety that is perfect for greenhouses, garden plots, raised beds, and containers. Its red stalk, mild flavor, and tender leaves make it a popular choice for fresh market growers and home gardeners. Bunching onions are technically perennial but are typically grown as annuals or biennials

Seed can be sown in early spring for summer use, and in July or August for fall and spring use. Bunching onions prefer a soil with a pH of 6.2–6.8. Extra-hardy varieties will normally survive the winter if the soil is well drained.
