Red Burgundy Onions grow in fertile and well-drained soil. They love good drainage due to the fact that onions can be prone to mildew and rot. Allium cepa 'Red Burgundy' requires full sun and comes to maturity in 170 days. They grow into flattened bulbs that have a 3-4" diameter. The tops of these onions can be thinned and used as green onions. Short-day onions that grow best in zones 8-9.

Various Uses for Red Burgundy Onion: Red Burgundy Onions are a great option for companion planting due to the fact that they ward-off many insect pests around lettuce, cabbage, and carrots. Known for their very mild and sweet flavor, Red Burgundy Onions are a great option for eating raw or cooked. They are delicious in salads, sandwiches, or stir-frys. This red onion variety also produces delicious green onions as well, and they are great as a garnish on baked potatoes, eggs, or pasta.

Red Burgundy Onion Benefits: Red onions have nutrients that can protect the body from cancers due to their high sulfur content. These same sulfurs can help prevent ulcers as well. One of the most helpful compounds being quercetin, which also helps with heart disease and allergies

Sowing: Red Burgundy onions require 3 months to mature from seed. Start seeds indoors for short growing seasons. Plant 1/2" deep in moist soil at room temperature. Prune seedling tops to promote root growth. Transplant 6" apart 4 weeks before the last frost or when the soil is at least 50 degrees F. For direct planting, sow 3 seeds per inch, 1/2" deep in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and full sun. Thin seedlings for desired size or replant them. Utilize companion planting for best results.

Growing: Onions require ample moisture during their early growth stages and are susceptible to weed infestations. Using mulch can aid in maintaining moisture levels and controlling weeds. Red Burgundy onions possess resistance to both Botrytis and Pink Rot.

Harvesting: Once the tops of the onions turn yellow or flop over, it is time for harvesting. Remove them from the soil, wipe off any dirt, and allow them to cure in the sun for a week. If it rains, transfer them indoors to cure in a well-ventilated area. Once the skin is dry, trim the tops to 1" and the roots as well. Store in a cool, dry location.
