Black Sesame is an early maturing cultivar that thrives in hot weather. Seeds from pumpkins, sunflowers, and sesame plants are commonly used in various dishes. Sesame seeds come from the plant Sesamum indicum, found in India, China, Mexico, and the Caribbean and southern U.S. It was believed to originate in Africa and is also known as benne.
Tips for Cultivating Black Sesame Seeds: Kurogoma Varieties
In USDA zones 9-10, direct sow Black Sesame seeds in a sunny, well-drained spot, planting them about 1/8 inch deep. If outside these zones, start indoors four to six weeks before last frost and transplant outside. Keep soil moist but avoid overwatering.
GROWING SESAME SEEDS
To ensure a successful harvest, start Black Sesame seeds indoors in a rich growing medium, planting them ¼â deep. Keep the soil moist and allow 10-14 days for the plants to emerge. Once outside temperatures reach 70 degrees, they can be transplanted.
Once established, sesame is drought-tolerant and will grow to 3-5 feet or taller with white and sometimes pink flowers. Plant sesame in full sunlight spaced 2-3 feet apart to allow healthy development. Once established, sesame can thrive even in high temperatures with little water.
Harvesting Sesame
Harvest sesame seeds by collecting the dried, open seed pods from the bottom branches. Bring the pods indoors to finish drying, then shake them over a bowl, bucket, or cloth to collect the seeds. In short growing seasons, you can also harvest the still-green pods and dry them indoors for a longer drying period. Repeat these steps to gather all of the seeds.
