The Hedgehog Gourd, also known as the Teasel Gourd ,Spine gourd or Wild Cucumber, is a nutritious and delicious variety of wild cucumber. Grown in tropical regions worldwide, it is native to Ethiopia and its green fruit is commonly eaten. Its nutraceutical properties, including high levels of antioxidants and nutrients, make it a highly recommended supplement.

What is a Hedgehog Gourd?

The teasel gourd (Cucumis dipsaceus), also known as hedgehog cucumber, tiger's egg, and wild spiny cucumber, is a plant that originates from eastern Africa. It is commonly grown in coastal regions of India, where it is referred to as Kantola in Hindi.

growing : Sow Teasel seeds indoors or in the ground. Optimal growth in spring after last frost or autumn for winter stratification. Indoors, sow seeds in tray of compost from Jan to Apr. Prepare soil before planting, then evenly scatter and lightly press seeds. Keep the soil moist until germination and thin seedlings to 12 inches apart. Gradually harden off plants before transplanting outside, and water regularly until established. Deadhead stems to prevent self-seeding. Teasels can grow in full sun or partial shade and tolerate a range of pH levels, but prefer well-drained soil.
Beware of its extreme bitterness when ripe.
The Hedgehog Gourd is both nutritious and visually appealing, with elegant fruits hanging from its vines. For optimal growth, use a trellis for this sprawling vine that can reach up to 8-10 feet in length.
