Crabapple trees, belonging to the genus Malus in the rose family (Rosaceae), are commonly found in North America and Asia. These small trees are prized for their beautiful growth patterns, springtime flower exhibitions, and ornamental fruits.
Grow a unique and versatile Honan Crabapple in your garden - a shrub or small tree that can reach 5-7 meters tall. This species, also known as Malus honanensis, is often used as rootstock for domesticated apples and has reddish-brown branchlets and buds, with pinkish white flowers and yellowish-red fruit.
Versatile and eye-catching, the Honan Crabapple can be used for hedges or as an ornamental tree. Its dense growth habit and showy flowers make it a unique addition to any garden. It shares similarities with Malus kansuensis but differs in leaf lobes, margins, and fruit shape.
Growing Honan Crabapple from seed is a straightforward process. Simply combine the extracted seeds with peat-free compost or leafmould in equal parts. Use a ratio of two to three handfuls of mixture for every handful of seeds. Be sure to lightly moisten the mixture so that only one or two drops of water escape when squeezed between your knuckles.
