Maltese Cross Lychnis is a beloved flower in cottage gardens. This hardy perennial thrives in sunny borders and forms an upright clump of vibrant green leaves. Its taller stems boast clusters of striking scarlet-orange flowers. Jerusalem Cross Lychnis is perfect for cutting, and its reliability and longevity make it a top choice.
Sowing: The Maltese Cross seed should be directly sown in early spring when the soil is workable. Lightly press the seed into the soil as it requires light to germinate. The soil should be kept consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs within 2-3 weeks. For indoor planting, use germination flats 6-8 weeks before the last frost of spring. Keep the soil moist and transplant the seedlings when they can be carefully handled.
Growing: Keep the plants well watered and remove weeds. This plant needs consistent moisture, though it does not grow well in soggy soil. For more blooms, cut back by one third after the first blooms have finished. These long-lived plants can spread in favorable growing conditions, and mature plants can be divided in spring or fall.
Harvesting: Achieve longer lasting bouquets with the Flowers Seed - Maltese Cross, Perennial. By choosing stems with freshly opened flowers and cutting off the foliage that will fall below the water level, you'll create arrangements that are both beautiful and durable. Place your bouquets in water immediately for optimal freshness and lasting beauty.
