Prairie Dropseed, or Sporobolus Heterolepis, is an ornamental graminoid with green foliage and yellow flowers from the genus Sporobolus. It grows moderately and reaches a height of 2.3 feet at maturity. This perennial plant will continue to grow year after year and is most active during the spring and summer months. It also blooms during the summer and can tolerate some shade.Sporobolus Heterolepis or Prairie Dropseed's floral region is North America US Lower 48, specifically in the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Sowing: Direct sow either in late fall or early spring. Plant the Sporobolus heterolepis seed just below the surface of the soil, compacting the soil very firmly. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination, since this seed cannot germinate in dry soil.
Growing: Water seedlings occasionally until they become established. This plant prefers moist soil, though it tolerates periods of drought. It adapts well to various soil types such as sand, clay, and gravel with adequate moisture. This plant will spread by self-seeding. Mature plants can be divided. This plant makes an very good choice for erosion control, wetland restoration, and strengthening stream banks. It is also a popular ornamental plant, and the seeds attract small birds.
