How to Grow Molokhia Egyptian Spinach
In order to successfully plant Molokhia seeds (also known as Egyptian spinach), they need to undergo pre-treatment to break their dormancy. The recommended method is to briefly soak the seeds in hot water and then let them soak in room temperature water for 12 hours. This process improves germination rates.
2. Once the pre-treatment is complete, plant the seeds 1/4 inch deep and 2 inches apart. It is important to keep the soil consistently moist as Molokhia requires warm temperatures and high humidity to thrive.
3. Under optimal conditions, the seeds should germinate within 3 days.
4. Once the seedlings have three sets of leaves, thin them to 10 inches apart.
5. If planting directly outdoors, ensure that the soil temperature is consistently around 75°F before sowing the seeds. If the climate is cooler, it is recommended to start the seeds indoors and transplant them later. For direct seeding,
Harvesting : Molokhia has a rapid growth rate and reaches full maturity in just 60 days. To begin harvesting, wait until the plant is about 24 inches tall and trim off the stems and leaves as they grow taller. Trimming will stimulate branching and keep the plant at a manageable size. All of the dark green leaves can be used and will regrow for continuous harvesting until fall. In the fall, yellow flowers will appear and create easy-to-harvest seed pods. These pods can then be dried completely on the plant before removing, drying, and storing for future use.
