For even faster germination, file or nick the Canna Lily seeds before planting. Canna seeds should germinate in 10 - 20 days at 76 - 80F.
Cut old spent flowers and seed pods to encourage repeated flowering late into the autumn season. Canna plants should be spaced 9 - 18 inches apart depending on the size of the varieties used and the effect desired. In dry weather, watering Canna Lily plants once a week will insure a stronger growth. Another common name for Canna is Indian Shot or Canna Lily. Canna grows best in wet locations. Nice for a water's edge, plantings near ponds and pools work well. Not hardy north of zone 7, but makes an excellent annual flowering plant. This Canna variety will often bloom in just 90 days after planting flower seeds.
DETAIL GROWING INFORMATION
Planting canna seeds
For those who have not grown Canna from seed before, this may be a good time to start giving it some thought. The best time to plant the seeds is dependant on the facilities that you have available.
If you have access to a propagator or heated greenhouse then seed can be sown as early as mid-January to early February. Given these conditions and reasonable weather in late spring and early summer we have sometimes had young seedlings burst into flower as early as mid-June.
If you are growing in a warm room, don't sow too early, unless you can provide heat and light to keep the young plants growing nicely through till April-May, when you will be able to transfer them to the unheated greenhouse, as they will likely be too tall for a cold frame.
Cannas have an extremely hard protective seed coat that is impermeable to water, so they will not germinate without some assistance. You can help the germination process by removing a bit of the seed coat through a process called scarification prior to planting.
Once canna seeds have been scarified, they are easy to grow. Only the tiniest amount needs to be exposed and it is better to file too little away than too much. If you look at the seed carefully, you will see a scar (hylem). It is through here that the growing shoot will break through. You should file the coat on the opposite side to the scar in order to avoid damage to the embryo.
How you go about scarification (nicking) is quite easy. There are several variations on this, and everybody develops their favourite method.
Take a piece of sandpaper and sand the end of the seed until you get through the black seed coat.
An alternative is holding them in a pair of pliers and using a file, carefully cutting into the coat until you reach the white endocarp within the seed,Or you may want to use a grinding wheel, which I use (a cheap Chinese import). I hold the seed in a pair of pliers and hold the seed to the grinding wheel just for a few seconds, until I see white.
Which ever method you use, you'll know that you're through when you see the white endosperm. Basically, what you're trying to do is make a hole in the seed coat so that water can get through.
Again, there are several techniques available to germinate the seed.
I get some very warm water, almost hot and I put the seeds in for 48 hours or until I see the embryo coming out one end. I change the water twice daily to keep it from souring.
Another popular approach is to add some vermiculite to a plastic bag, add water to moisten and then add the seeds. The bag is not locked so that air can circulate. The bag is kept in warm conditions, an incubatotor or airing cupboard. The disadvantage with this is that after a while the water will sour, and while I have used this method in the past I now prefer the first one, because changing the water requires a change of vermiculite as well, and vermiculite costs money!
Some plant the seeds directly into small pots and water, waiting until a growth of some sort is seen, this might be a growing leaf or a white embryo, depending on the position the seed was placed in the pot. As some seeds will not germinate I always feel reluctant to spend on pot and compost until I see the seed has germinated. Call me a skinflint if you want, I just blame my parents!
Once you see the white embryo coming out you can pot them up. I use 2 inch peat pots filled with a peat-based compost with added fertilizer. I plant the seeds 1/2 inch deep with the embryo pointing downhill, water well and put in direct light.
Maintain a temperature of 21-24°C (70 to 75°F). In a few days (5-6) you should see growth. As the plants begin to actively grow, the soil will dry out quickly, so check daily and water when needed. Keep the growing medium moist, and do not over-water, as more seedlings die from that cause than from neglect.
Depending on how long a growing period the seedling has indoors it may need planting into a larger pot, and the advantage of the initial peat pot is that this just means planting the whole pot, thus no root disturbance.
Gradually harden off the cannas and transplant them outside, adding plenty of compost to the soil, following the last-frost date. They should flower about 90 to 120 days after the seed was sown.

Flower Specifications
Season: Perennial
USDA Zones: 7 - 11
Height: 24 - 30 inches
Bloom Season: Early summer to frost
Bloom Color: Red
Environment: Full sun
Soil Type: Prefers moist, well-drained soils, pH 6.1 - 7.5

Planting Directions
Temperature: 76 - 80F
Average Germ Time: 10 - 20 days
Light Required: No
Depth: 1/2 inch
Sowing Rate: 1 - 2 seeds per plant
Moisture: Keep seeds moist until germination
Plant Spacing: 9 - 18 inches

Materials: The Perfumed Garden,Canna,Seeds, tropical,Canna Seeds,Perennial,Garden seed Select your desired size and color from the available option

Shady beds, borders and woodland gardens. Grown from Balsam seeds, this favorite will continuously bloom from early summer right up until the first frost of fall. The stems are loaded with a mix of of colors: rose, salmon, white, scarlet, and violet. These Impatiens Balsamina flowers are formed on clean, almost transparent stems with just the right amount of foliage to make a very attractive addition to any flower garden.

This species of impatiens is a true annual. It is easily grown in evenly moist, organically rich, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Best in part shade area. Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost date or purchase selections in pots. Set out plants after last frost date. Consider pinching back stems of young plants when they reach about 4” tall. Plants may self-seed in the garden (sometimes very aggressively in tropical climates).
Growing Balsam from seed can be done right into the garden after frost season has passed. Balsam germinates quickly in just 10 - 14 days, and it is not too fussy about soil, but a sandy loam works very well. Balsam is one of the few flowers, planted from flower seeds, that can do well in sun or shade as long as it has plenty of moisture. Balsam is a liberal self-slower. After one growing season, it generally reappears from self-sown flower seeds. Balsam will grow rapidly and begin blooming when only a few inches tall and continue to flower until it is as high as 12 - 18 inches. For an earlier start, sow Balsam seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last spring frost. Do not cover the flower seeds with soil, as they need light to germinate. Until the seeds germinate, cover the seed trays with clear plastic to maintain high humidity. Water from below to prevent damping off, and transplant the Balsam seedlings outdoors, spacing them 12 - 18 inches apart.
Flower Specifications
Season: Annual
USDA Zones: 3 - 10
Height: 12 - 18 inches
Bloom Season: Summer through fall
Bloom Color: Mix
Environment: Partial shade
Soil Type: Moist, well-drained, pH 6.1 - 7.8
Planting Directions
Temperature: 65 - 70F
Average Germ Time: 10 - 14 days
Light Required: Yes
Depth: Do not cover the seed but press into the soil
Sowing Rate: 4 - 5 seeds per plant
Moisture: Keep seeds moist until germination
Plant Spacing: 12 - 18 inches

Select your desired size and color from the available option

Red Iochroma Seeds – Iochroma fuchsioides

Also known as: Red Iochroma, Fuchsia-flowered Iochroma, Andean Trumpet Shrub

If you’ve ever wanted a plant that stops people in their tracks, Iochroma fuchsioides is it. Some growers simply file or sand the outside of the seed so moisture can enter.

The seeds naturally germinate in the rotting fruits after they have fallen from the tree. The acids in the fruit help penetrate the seed coats, which are also still soft. To mimic this idea, some growers will soak the seeds in a mild acid such as vinegar or diluted HCL for five minutes to eat away the seed coat. Afterwards, they must rinse the seeds to make sure the acids do not linger. After wearing down the seed coat using one method or the other, the seeds need to be sterilized in peroxide because the long germination period lends easily to mold formation.

While mold doesn’t signify automatic failure, it should be avoided at all costs. If it affects the embryo your seeds will die. Sterilizing your soil and/or using one that contains little to no organic matter will also help avoid mold. Rock wool is ideal. It is important that your soil be well-draining so that water does not sit against the seeds for too long and cause them to develop mold. Bury the seeds at a depth of twice their thickness and keep them warm (about 90 degrees).

A heating pad may be helpful in this case. Although it's not a true annual, this fast-growing plant can be expected to behave as an annual in our climate if left outdoors over the winter, usually needing replacement the following year. It requires an evenly moist well-drained soil for optimal growth, but will die in standing water. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates. This particular variety is an interspecific hybrid. It can be propagated by division; however, as a cultivated variety, be aware that it may be subject to certain restrictions or prohibitions on propagation.

Tropical™ Yellow Canna is a fine choice for the garden, but it is also a good selection for planting in outdoor pots and containers. With its upright habit of growth, it is best suited for use as a 'thriller' in the 'spiller-thriller-filler' container combination; plant it near the center of the pot, surrounded by smaller plants and those that spill over the edges. It is even sizeable enough that it can be grown alone in a suitable container. Note that when growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require more frequent waterings than they would in the yard or garden.

Due to this factor, it is best to soak the flower seeds for 24 - 48 hours before planting to soften the seed coat.
