Use this Greek Oregano in a variety of dishes, such as pizza, egg dishes, and tomato sauces, to enjoy its aromatic and flavorful qualities. Originally from the Mediterranean, this plant thrives in lower humidity climates, so be sure to provide good air circulation and avoid excess moisture. It can be grown in a container or in the ground, where it forms a mat-like ground cover. Harvest the leaves throughout the growing season, but they are most flavorful when the stems are tall and about to flower. To promote leaf growth, trim the stems multiple times.
Oregano, with its strong aroma and taste, is an ideal plant for growing in pots. Its trailing nature is perfect for spilling over pot edges or walls, making it a great seasonal ground cover or edging for paths. In late summer, the bright-green leaves of Greek or Italian oregano are adorned with beautiful white flowers. This plant is known for its impressive growth and abundant harvests.
Oregano should be planted in a sunny location; however, in zone 7 and farther south, it may benefit from some afternoon shade. Ensure that the soil has a pH of 6.5-7.0 and is well-drained. If needed, mix a few inches of All Purpose In-Ground Soil, which is enriched with aged compost, into the top layer of existing soil. Oregano can also thrive in containers, so use a high-quality potting mix like Miracle-Gro® Performance Organics® All Purpose Container Mix, which includes aged compost and is specifically designed for container growing.
