Colchicum autumnale, also known as autumn crocus or meadow saffron, is a perennial plant that flowers during the early fall season. It is perfect for filling gaps in your landscape as other plants start to fade.. Meadow Saffron Seeds - Colchicum autumnale - are a great addition to woodlands and meadows. Perfect for creating pockets of color, these seeds can also be planted around patios and walkways to add beauty year-round.
Plant with low ground covers which may help support weak flower stems. Generally inappropriate for prominent parts of beds or borders because of the unsightly appearance of the spring foliage as it yellows and declines on its way toward summer dormancy.

Colchicum autumnale, also known as autumn crocus or meadow saffron, is a perennial plant with star-shaped, lavender-pink to lilac-pink flowers that bloom in early fall. The foliage dies in early summer and the plant goes dormant until the following spring.
The name "naked ladies" is sometimes used due to the plant's bare flower stalks. Colchicum is also known for its medicinal uses. However, it is important to note that despite its name, autumn crocus is not related to spring crocus.
  • Sow seeds at any time covering them with compost or grit 5mm deep, keeping the seed pot in a cool, well-lit spot outdoors. Artificial heat is not needed and can prevent germination so be very patient as many species will only germinate in the spring after chilling or freezing in the moist seed tray in the winter. Grow on individual seedlings in small pots until of sufficient size to be potted on or planted out into the open ground.
