String of Pearls is a unique and beautiful succulent that is valued for its distinctive appearance.
String of Pearls is a popular hanging succulent native to east Africa, where it naturally grows as ground cover. This distinctive plant features pearl-like foliage and thrives as a decorative hanging specimen in cultivation.
Distinctive pea-shaped leaves cascade elegantly from hanging baskets or container edges, creating a striking visual display. This unique succulent, also known as string of beads or string of peas, is immediately recognizable by its characteristic pearl-like foliage.
This East African succulent produces white spring flowers and exhibits summer dormancy. Hardy in zones 9-12, it features thick cascading stems that grow rapidly, reaching up to 2 feet long at approximately 15 inches annually.
- Water when on the dry side
- Prefers bright, indirect light or filtered window light
- Trim as needed
- Soil: Should be loose and porous like a cactus soil
This succulent thrives in partial sun or bright indirect light, preferring well-draining soil and minimal watering. It can also be grown indoors as a stunning houseplant or added to frost-free xeriscapes for ornamental purposes. In colder climates, bring outdoor containers inside during the winter for protection.
- We recommend planting 4-5 starter plants per 10 inch basket. Use a well-drained soil in your baskets and plant your starter plants deep, allowing the elpot to be completely covered by the soil. If you are planting 4" pots, 1 plant per pot should be sufficient. Plant it directly in the middle of your pot.
- Best in fertile, well-drained soil. Keep soil moist, watering freely in dry weather. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly. Trim back as needed to keep neat and compact.
