Introducing the newest variety of blueberry - 'Pink Lemonade' - a rare and unique fruit with a playful pink hue. Not only does it stand out in appearance, but it also boasts a high level of antioxidants, making it a healthy choice for any fruit lover. Enjoy the surprising burst of sweetness in every bright pink berry of 'Pink Lemonade'. These plants are very vigorous and ornamentally attractive. Developed by the USDA with parentage to be successful in low chill climates. ‘Pink Lemonade’ offers four-season interest. The shrub has pinkish-white showy bell-shaped flowers in the spring. The fruits are pale greenish at first, then dappled pink, and finally develop a deep pink color indicating a ripened fruit. The leaves are smooth, glossy green, with serrated leaf margins. In fall, the leaves turn a bright orange fading to deep red. Wintertime twigs are dusky reddish-brown. Any un-harvested fruit supplies sustaining food to songbirds and wildlife. Make sure you put it where you can enjoy this beautiful year round shrub!
Blueberries are extremely nutritious and have a high vitamin content. They are excellent in pies and make delicious jams and preserves. Best of all, bake your own ‘Pink’ blueberry muffins! Imagine, a late summer compote of mixed berries with the addition of the ‘Pink Lemonade’ fruits or a blueberry pie with a mix of the traditional blue berries along with the ‘Pink Lemonade’ berries. How beautiful!
Planting Instructions: Prepare the ground well before planting. Blueberries prefer an acid soil. In alkaline soil, add ammonium sulfate for best results. Dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. When planting, add generous amounts of peat but no fertilizer. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly. Blueberries can also be grown in large pots and containers if compost is used. Prune in winter, cutting out dead or damaged branches. In spring, feed with sulphate of ammonia, sulphate of potash, bonemeal and top-dress with compost.
Pests or Diseases: No serious insect or disease problems. You may protect your fruit from birds with netting.
