Tufted HairgrassĀ (Deschampsia cespitosa)Ā - A highly ornamental, fine, grass which has hairlike tufts rising two to three feet above neatly rounded, dense tussocks which form a cloud over the foliage. When it first comes up it has a green appearance; however, as it heads in to fall it turns gold late in the season, keeping good color and form for through winter. This clump forming, cool season grass is useful for stabilizing disturbed sites, streambanks and shorelines in partially shaded and/or damp areas. Deschampsia cespitos makes an excellent shade garden grass and can be mixed with other plants such as ferns.
It can be easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in partial shade. Prefers moist, organically rich soils. For best Spring appearance, cut old foliage to the ground in late winter before new shoots appear.Ā Tufted hairgrass is one of the few ornamental grasses that grows well in moderately shady locations; however, it will not flower well if moved into too much shade. Grows best in USDA Zones 4 - 9 as a perennial.
