This white Jupiter's Beard seed produces fragrant flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. It is also drought tolerant and known as White Valerian.
Grow white Jupiter's Beard from flower seed easily with 1000 seeds covering 75 square feet. Spacing of 12-15 inches in a sunny or light shaded garden is ideal. This long-lived plant thrives in ordinary soil with good drainage and is fairly drought tolerant. Deadheading encourages fuller and later season blooms, and pruning in the summer can promote another round of blooms.
Sow Jupiter's Beard seed indoors in starter trays 6 - 8 weeks before the end of frost season. Keep flower seeds continuously moist until germination. Transplant seedling outdoors when frost danger has passed. Or, directly sow Jupiter's Beard seeds outdoors into prepared soil in spring when temperatures are consistently warm. The White Valerian plant is a liberal self-sower. Deadhead spent blooms if you do not want the flower seed to spread.
