Allium insubricum
Plant
Allium insubricum is a plant species endemic to the Lombardy region in northern Italy. It is named for Insubria, the ancient name for the area around present-day Milan.
large genus of bulbous plants, most oh which have a distinctive smell of garlic (onions, leeks, chives, and garlic are all members). However, many are worth growing for their flowers and, unless the foliage is broken, the odour is seldom offensive. Easily raised from seed.
A rare, distinct and very beautiful species from limestone scree in the south west Alps in France and Italy, bearing in summer umbels of pendulous, large, bright rose, bell-shaped, nodding flowers. Closely related to A.narcissiflorum, this is considered to be one of the most desirable Allium species. 8-12 ins. Seed scarce. Packet of 6 seeds. HOW TO GROW
For container grown plants, sow flowered keeled garlic seeds in soil that is very porous. A recommended soil mixture is 1 part perlite, 1 part peat moss, and 1 part potting soil. If growing the plants outdoors, amend the soil with organic matter so that it drains well. The flowered keeled garlic plants will rot if the soil retains water. Sow the Garlic herb seeds on the soil and lightly cover with 1/8 inch of soil and keep the flower seeds moist until germination.
