Everlasting Sweet Pea, Perennial Sweet Pea, Lathyrus latifolius 'Albus'
Hardy Perennial
It may be difficult to find a more colorful and easy to grow flower than the perennial sweet pea vine (Lathryus latifolius). These European natives are easy to grow and require little continuing care. Although they lack the fragrance of annual sweet peas, they add color and charm to any garden and grow well in the long days and warm temperatures common in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 to 10.
Description
Everlasting sweet peas grow as ground cover in large areas or will quickly reach a height of 6 to 8 feet on a trellis or arbor. The gray-green vines are punctuated with clusters of bright flowers in various shades of red, white, purple and pink. Blooming begins in early summer and continues until early fall if the seed pods are removed as they appear. Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers that also provide cut flowers for indoor vases.

Perennial Sweet Pea
Sweet Pea (Lathyrus Latifolius Pearl Mix) - Perennial Sweet Pea vine is also known as Everlasting Pea or Everlasting Peavine. It will grow 48 - 60 inches and will climb any adjacent vegetation or structure with its twining tendrils. In open areas it will spread along the ground. The blooms are about 1 inch across and the plant will flower for about 2 months during the summer. Perennial Sweet Pea flowers in this mix are in shades of white, pink, and red. This is the perfect vining plant for covering up out-buildings or old fences. Unlike the annual varieties, perennial Sweet Pea vine does not have a fragrance. Like clover, the Everlasting Pea plant fixates nitrogen in the ground which will help the plant grow.
For best germination, Sweet Peas seeds need to be scarified before sowing. Nicking the seed with a nail clipper breaks the outer coat of Lathyrus Latifolius seeds so they can absorb water immediately. By doing this a larger percentage of the seeds will germinate and they will sprout a few days earlier. After nicking the seed, soak the perennial Sweet Pea seeds over night in tepid water.
Sow Sweet Peas seeds directly outdoors after frost season has passed. Prepare a seed bed by loosening the top 1 - 2 inches of soil and weeding. Sow Everlasting Sweet Pea seeds 2 - 3 inches apart, and thin Sweet Pea seedlings later to desired spacing. Have a trellis or wire for them to attach to as they will begin to climb very quickly after germination.
