Naples Long ,Pumpkin Seed (Cucurbita moschata) heirloom, winter squash
Naples Long - Pumpkin/Squash Seed from Italy. Bright orange flesh, deep green skin, great for warm, long seasons. Rare Italian variety, perfect for home or market growers. Combine with ornamental pumpkins for a beautiful display. Packet: 25 seeds. Open Pollinated !
This winter squash grows in summer and takes a while to mature, but once ripe, its fruits have a durable outer shell and can be stored all winter.
PLANT SPACING:
Medium and large pumpkins require ample space and sunlight to grow and reach their full potential. We recommend a 6 foot spacing between rows for optimal results.
Sowing: Prepare for squash planting by starting seeds indoors in peat pots before the last frost. Harden seedlings and then transplant them into rich soil, either in rows or hills. Alternatively, directly sow seeds later and thin them out later. Avoid planting with potatoes, but consider companion planting with corn.
Growing: Protect squash seedlings from frost with coverings. Keep soil moist, avoid wet leaves to prevent diseases. Use mulch for moisture, weed control, and cleanliness. Pinch off blooms to focus on squashes.
Harvesting: When harvesting, ensure the stem has started to dry and the skin is too firm to puncture with a fingernail. Due to potential damage from cold weather, it is best to harvest your squashes before the first frost. Cut the stem with a sharp knife, leaving a 2-3 inch length. Do not carry the squash by the stem as it may break off, causing the squash to rapidly deteriorate. To properly cure your squashes, place them in the sun or a dry location until the stem shrivels; avoid washing the squashes if they are intended for storage. Known for their thick, dry flesh perfect for baking and long storage life, Australian Butter squashes are an excellent choice.
