70-90 Days. Fagopyrum esculentum. Organic. Cover Crop. Heirloom. Cultivated like wheat. Non-GMO Buckwheat seeds grow an ancient foraging crop traditionally used for livestock fodder, but now popular for tilling, mulching, or delicate white blossoms.

Buckwheat grows quickly, matures in 10-12 weeks, and provides food over an extended period of time. It is suitable for most soil types and can be used as a green manure crop. Perfect for specific farming situations.

Reasons to grow buckwheat

    • Fits into rotations at a time when fields might otherwise be idle.
    • Can be grown as a catch crop where another crop failed.
    • Inexpensive to grow because it requires no pesticides and little fertilizer.
    • Can be grown with equipment available on most farms.
    • Requires little attention during the growing season.
    • Mellows the soil and suppresses some weeds.
    • Easily raised Organically, at a premium price.

Plant in spring or summer after all danger of frost is past. Buckwheat matures in about 10-12 weeks after germination. Planting dept 1" or less. SEEDING RATE: 40 to 50 lbs per acre or 3 lbs per 1,000 square feet

Buckwheat is widely grown as a grain crop, bee pasture, soil improving cover crop and as wildlife cover. It is a warm season grain which grows rapidly during the summer and several crops per year may be had with proper management. This rapid and dense growth chokes out weeds and is used in crop-free fields in rotation with vegetables. Buckwheat is often grown to attract beneficial insects and as pasture for honey bees. Sow in late May through July and till in about a month later, when flowering has begun. For grain harvest, sow 3 months before fall frost. Harvest after killing frost. Planting rate: 2-3 lb./1,000 sq.ft. (60 lb./acre), one-fifth less when planting for grain harvest. Organically grown.
