Pasque Flower Seeds - Anemone patens wolfgangiana, the official flower of South Dakota.
Anemone patens wolfgangiana is the South Dakota state flower with short height, ability to grow in dry soils, and silver seedheads. It thrives in zones 4-8 with a preferred pH of 7-8. Also known as Pulsatilla patens or Pulsatilla nuttalliana, it is a well-known native plant and belongs to the Buttercup family.
Pasque Flower, also known as Anemone patens wolfgangiana, is a native prairie plant that blooms a month earlier than most other spring flowers. Its cold hardiness makes it suitable for even the northern regions, like Alaska.
The silky hairs on its stems and blossoms provide insulation from the cold, allowing it to thrive in harsh environments. This plant earned its name "Pasque" from its tendency to bloom around Easter, and its unique flowers resemble those of European crocuses. Early European immigrants even gave it the name "prairie crocus." With a lifespan of up to 50 years, pasque flower plants continue to produce more blossoms each year as they grow.
Sowing: To ensure successful growth, stratify this seed to break its dormancy. The most effective method is to directly sow pasque flower seeds just below the surface of the soil in late fall, allowing natural stratification to occur during the cold winter months. Alternatively, mix the seed with moist sand, refrigerate for 60 days, and plant just below the soil surface in spring after the last frost. Since transplanting is not well-tolerated, this plant thrives when directly planted outdoors rather than starting indoors.
Growing: This plant needs well-drained, sandy or rocky soil and full sun. It grows from root cuttings and blooms in the third year. Excess moisture can cause root rot, so avoid overwatering. Seeds will sprout immediately with enough moisture, otherwise, they will sprout in the next spring.
