White Dixie Butterpea (Pbush Lima) Heirloom is a high-quality variety of Lima bean that has round, white seeds known for their smooth texture and delicious flavor. It is particularly well-suited for growing in warmer climates and typically takes only 50 days to reach maturity. With its scientific name Phaseolus lunatus, this heirloom variety is perfect for those looking to add a touch of gourmet to their garden.
Sowing: To ensure optimal growth, it is recommended to plant White Dixie Butter pea lima beans in a sunny location with well-enriched soil at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit after the last frost. Sow the seeds 1" deep and 5" apart, "eye" side down, in rows that are 24" to 36" apart. Keep in mind that germination may take some time, but the end result will be worth the wait.
Growing: For optimal growth, thin the plants to a distance of 8 inches apart. It is important not to transplant the seedlings. Avoid over-watering as this can lead to rot. Keep weeds in check before the plants bloom to avoid disturbing them during this crucial stage, which could result in dropped blossoms.
Harvesting: The first harvest should be about 70 days after germination. Pick the beans when the pod begins to fill out and feels firm. Generally, the smaller the bean the more tender it will taste. Prompt picking actually increases the harvest, while leaving the pods on the plant too long results in tough beans.
Seed Saving: To avoid cross pollination, it is recommended to separate and isolate any plants intended for seed saving, specifically from other varieties of lima, runner, or fava beans. This can be done by placing them at least half a mile away from each other. Towards the end of the growing season, allow the beans to dry thoroughly on the vine until the pods turn a light brown and the seeds can be heard rattling inside. Once fully dried, remove the seeds from their pods and store in a cool, dry area for up to one year.
