Burnet or scotch rose is a small, hardy suckering shrub in the Rosacea family native to Europe and Asia. Its Latin name is Rosa spinosissima. Spinosissima means “most spiny” which describes the abundance of prickles and spines of various sizes on the stem.
Cultivation
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: cold stratify for 90 -120 days
Germination: sow seed 3/8" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed
This is a very easy-to-grow species, although well-drained soil is key to its success. Slightly acidic soil is preferred, although the plant is adaptable enough for this not to make that much of a difference. It is extremely salt tolerant and can grow well in pure sand.Hardy USDA Zones 2a-8b
