Speckles, Splashes & Spectacular Contrast — A Container Garden Star
Miss Muffet is one of the most unique and eye-catching caladiums you can grow. Its heart-shaped leaves are a vivid chartreuse green, white veins running through, and burgundy spots scattered across the surface — creating a layered, jewel-like effect that stands out beautifully in containers, hanging baskets, and shaded garden beds. Compact and mounded at just 12 inches tall with a 14-inch spread, it’s a perfect “filler” plant in container combinations, providing a dynamic foliage canvas that makes bolder thriller plants pop.
Plant Highlights
- Leaf type: Fancy leaf — heart-shaped, mounded habit
- Colors: Chartreuse leaves with white veins, burgundy spots, and blush accents
- Height: 12 inches
- Spread: 14 inches; space plants 10 inches apart in mass plantings
- Light: Partial shade to full shade
- USDA Zones: 9–11 (lift tubers in fall in colder zones)
- Deer resistant and urban pollution tolerant
- Great for: Containers, hanging baskets, borders, mass planting, accent planting, indoor display
- Thrives in: Heat and humidity
How to Plant Caladium Bulbs
Plant tubers flat side down, eyes facing up, 1–1½ inches deep. Wait until soil temperature reaches 65°F before planting outdoors. For container plantings, de-eye tubers before planting for increased leaf count and uniformity. Pre-sprout indoors 4–6 weeks before moving outside by keeping warm at 70–75°F in barely moist growing mix.
Care Tips
- Soil: Average to moist, well-draining; not particular about soil type or pH
- Water: Keep consistently moist; do not allow to dry out
- Light: Partial shade to full shade; highly tolerant of urban conditions
- Containers: Excellent for outdoor containers and hanging baskets — may require more frequent watering than in-ground plantings
- Winter storage: In zones below 9, lift tubers before first frost and store in a cool, dry place until spring
Miss Muffet is a show-stopping filler plant — its chartreuse and burgundy foliage adds irresistible texture and color to any shaded container combination or garden bed.
