When your bulbs arrive

Unpack promptly and keep bulbs somewhere cool, dry, and ventilated until planting. Avoid sealed plastic bags, moisture buildup, and prolonged warmth. Plant during your local fall bulb-planting window once soil has cooled and before the ground freezes.

Planting in the garden

  1. Choose a sunny site where excess water drains freely.
  2. Remove weeds and loosen the soil, incorporating finished compost if needed.
  3. Set bulbs pointed end up, with the base approximately 6–8 inches below the soil surface.
  4. Space bulbs approximately 4–6 inches apart.
  5. Backfill and water to settle the soil around the bulbs.

Avoid low spots that remain soggy after rain. Plant in groups for a fuller display, adjusting practices to local soil and winter conditions.

Growing in containers

Use a deep, stable container with drainage holes and a freely draining potting mix. Allow room below bulbs for roots and above them for suitable planting depth. Bulbs should not touch one another or sit in standing water.

Container roots are more exposed to freezing than bulbs in garden beds. Protect pots appropriately for your climate while still providing the cold period tulips need.

Growing in warm climates

In mild-winter regions, unchilled tulip bulbs generally need artificial cooling before planting. Confirm whether bulbs have already received cold treatment; do not assume this listing supplies prechilled bulbs.

  1. Plan chilling: A common approach for unchilled tulips is approximately 12–16 weeks at 35–45°F (2–7°C). Follow lot-specific instructions and account for any previous chilling.
  2. Store safely: Refrigerate dry bulbs in a breathable paper or mesh bag. Do not freeze them or use airtight plastic.
  3. Avoid fruit: Ripening fruit, especially apples and pears, releases ethylene that can damage developing flowers. Keep bulbs separate from food, clearly labeled as not edible, and away from children and pets.
  4. Time planting: Finish chilling during your area's coolest planting window, often late fall or early winter in mild-winter regions. Plant promptly into cooled soil rather than hot ground.
  5. Limit heat stress: In hot locations, choose morning sun with light afternoon shade and avoid reflected heat from walls or paving. Maintain moderate moisture without saturating the roots.

Warm weather can shorten bloom life and affect stem length. In consistently tropical conditions, outdoor flowering can remain unreliable even after prechilling; a controlled cool-growing environment may be needed. Fresh bulbs are often used each season in warm climates.

Care during growth and flowering

Water as needed during active growth, adjusting for rainfall and allowing excess water to drain. Feed according to the label directions on a fertilizer suitable for bulbs. Avoid a fixed watering schedule that keeps soil wet.

Tulips are not reliably deer-, rabbit-, or rodent-resistant. Watch for browsing and digging damage and protect the planting as needed. For bouquets, cut stems with clean tools and leave as much foliage on the plant as practical if you hope to retain the bulbs.

After flowering

Remove spent flowers while leaving leaves intact. Allow foliage to yellow and die back naturally before removing it. Reduce watering during dormancy and avoid waterlogged summer soil.

If lifting bulbs, wait until the foliage has died back, then dry and store them somewhere cool, dry, and ventilated. Future flowering depends on bulb condition, storage, climate, and care.

Important safety information

Tulip bulbs and other plant parts are not edible and are toxic to pets if eaten. Keep bulbs away from children and animals. Wear gloves if handling bulbs irritates your skin, and wash hands after planting.
