Cucumber plants have the unique ability to produce both male and female flowers. Interestingly, only the female flowers are capable of producing cucumbers. This process begins with the bloom of male flowers, which attract pollinators and aid in the development of the female flowers. Additionally, some cucumber plants are self-pollinating.

For optimal growth, start Straight Eight cucumber seeds indoors in peat pots about 2 weeks before frost. Plant 3-4 seeds per pot, 1/2" deep, and maintain an air temperature of at least 80 degrees F. After 2-3 leaves have grown on each plant, use scissors to remove all but the strongest one. Harden seedlings by exposing them to outside air, then plant after last spring frost. For hill planting, use 3 seedlings or 7-8 seeds per hill, spaced 4-5' apart. For row planting, space seedlings 1' apart or thin after planting 5 seeds within 1'. Protect from cold weather and use a trellis for easier picking. Plant near corn or radishes for benefits, but not potatoes or aromatic herbs.

Growing: Cucumber SEEDS - Heirloom Vegetable have high disease resistance. To grow great cucumbers, keep the soil consistently moist and use mulch or straw. Look out for cucumber beetles and quickly remove them to avoid damage.

Harvesting: These dark green cucumbers are perfect for slicing. Harvest at 8" for best taste and high yield throughout the season. A yellow blossom end signals the cucumber is past its prime. Store in the fridge for long-lasting freshness.
