Classic Green Beans for a Productive Trellis Garden

Kentucky Wonder is an heirloom pole bean valued for its flavorful green pods and climbing habit. Its gently curved pods can reach approximately 9 inches long, but are best picked young for tender snap beans. Give the vines sturdy support and enjoy gathering fresh beans for cooked summer meals.

Variety details

  • Variety: Kentucky Wonder
  • Type: Heirloom pole bean
  • Growth habit: Climbing; requires a trellis, poles, or other sturdy support
  • Pods: Long, green, gently curved pods
  • Harvest uses: Young snap beans, shelled beans, or mature dry beans
  • Texture: Young pods are described as stringless; remove strings if present as pods mature
  • Product supplied: Seeds for planting

Planting your seeds

Direct sow after your last expected spring frost, when the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-draining soil. Sow approximately 1 inch deep and space seeds approximately 2–3 inches apart along the support. Install your trellis or poles before the vines begin climbing.

Growing and care

Keep soil consistently moist without waterlogging. Water near the soil surface rather than repeatedly wetting the foliage, and allow air to circulate around the vines. Mulch around established plants to help retain moisture. Avoid excessive nitrogen feeding, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of pod production.

Harvesting your beans

For snap beans, pick pods while tender and before the seeds inside become prominent. Hold the vine gently while picking, or snip the pod stem to avoid damaging the plant. Check plants frequently so pods do not become overmature.

For dry beans, allow mature pods to dry, then shell and finish drying the beans thoroughly before storage. Cook harvested beans before eating.
