Ethnobotanical & Historical Notes
Datura stramonium has a long history of traditional use across cultures. All species contain potent tropane alkaloids including hyoscyamine, atropine, and scopolamine. Historically, the plant has been used in folk medicine for pain relief, as an antispasmodic, and in Tibetan medicine for digestive and inflammatory conditions. Atropine derived from related species is still used in modern ophthalmology.
⚠️ Important: All parts of this plant — leaf, root, flower, and seed — are highly toxic. The margin between a medicinal and toxic dose is extremely narrow. This plant is sold strictly as a botanical specimen and for ornamental/educational purposes. Use is subject to legal restrictions in some countries. Keep away from children and pets. Do not ingest.
