Purple Passion | Live Starter Plant |Gynura aurantiaca

Add rich color and soft texture to an indoor plant collection with Purple Passion, also called Velvet Plant. Gynura aurantiaca develops green leaves covered in fine purple hairs that appear especially vivid in bright light. Its trailing stems suit hanging baskets, shelves, and elevated planters.

Plant Details

  • Botanical name: Gynura aurantiaca
  • Common names: Purple Passion Plant and Velvet Plant
  • Growth habit: Trailing and branching
  • Light: Bright, indirect light
  • Best uses: Hanging baskets, indoor containers, and trailing displays

Selecting an Option

Choose 1 live starter plant, 3 live starter plants, or a package of 10 roots. The root option requires potting and establishment before producing a finished plant. Live plants and roots naturally vary in size and appearance.

Indoor Care

Grow in a loose, well-drained potting mix and a container with drainage holes. Water thoroughly, then let the upper layer of mix begin to dry before watering again. Avoid leaving the roots in standing water. Keep the fuzzy foliage dry when possible and provide airflow around the plant.

Place near a bright window while protecting the foliage from harsh midday sun. Warm, stable indoor temperatures are preferred. Feed lightly during active growth according to the directions on a balanced houseplant fertilizer.

Pruning and Propagation

Pinch or trim long stem tips to encourage a fuller shape. Healthy stem cuttings may be rooted in water or moist potting mix to start additional plants. Mature plants can produce orange flowers with a noticeable odor; flower buds may be removed if the plant is being grown mainly for foliage.

After Arrival

Unpack promptly, check moisture, and place the plant or newly potted roots in bright indirect light while they adjust. Temporary wilting or minor leaf damage can occur during shipping. Avoid repotting a live starter immediately unless its container or growing medium is damaged.
