Pinus sylvestris — Scots Pine — is one of the most ecologically and commercially significant conifers in the northern hemisphere, native across a vast range from Scotland to Siberia and from sea level to high alpine elevations. In the garden and landscape, it earns its keep as a strikingly beautiful evergreen tree with blue-green needles, distinctive orange-red upper bark, and a naturally sculptural form that matures with character. Hardy to Zone 3, adaptable to a wide range of soils, and a traditional choice for windbreaks, shelterbelts, wildlife habitat, and as a Christmas tree that holds its needles exceptionally well. Grows to 60 ft with a 40 ft spread.
10 seeds per packet.
Why Scots Pine

- Striking orange-red upper bark and blue-green paired needles — ornamental year-round
- Popular as a Christmas tree — holds needles longer than most species
- Ideal as a windbreak, shelterbelt, or specimen tree
- High ecological value: wildlife habitat, slope stabilization
- Seed purity: 100% | Projected germination rate: 91% | Origin: Russia
Growing from Seed
Scarification: Soak seeds in room-temperature water for 24 hours before stratification to hydrate the seed coat.
Cold stratification: Mix soaked seeds with moist vermiculite or peat in a sealed plastic bag; refrigerate (do not freeze) for 90 days. Alternatively, sow seeds in a mulched outdoor seedbed in fall and allow nature to stratify them over winter for spring germination.
Sowing: After stratification, sow ¼ inch deep in clean seed-starting mix; tamp soil firmly and mulch the seed bed. Maintain consistent moisture; germination can take 1–3 weeks in warm conditions.
Storage: Store unseeded packets in the refrigerator to preserve viability. Tree seeds remain viable for approximately 1 year refrigerated. Do not freeze.
