Swordleaf Dwarf Rush Seeds

Add compact, deep-green texture to moist borders and pond edges with Juncus ensifolius. Also known as dwarf rush or daggerleaf rush, this perennial forms clumps of sword-shaped leaves topped by rounded, dark brown to purplish flower clusters in midsummer.

Plant details

  • USDA zones: 3โ€“10
  • Approximate height: 10 inches
  • Approximate width: 6โ€“9 inches
  • Light: full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: consistently moist to wet; listed preferred pH 5.0โ€“6.2
  • Moderate growth; can spread by seed and rhizomes

Where to grow

Use dwarf rush beside ponds, along stream banks or in consistently moist garden borders. Its compact foliage and distinctive flower clusters bring interest to wet meadows and water-garden plantings.

Starting from seed

Surface-sow on a moist seed-starting mix and do not cover the seeds, as light is required for germination. Keep the mix consistently moist at approximately 64โ€“72ยฐF. Germination typically takes 21โ€“28 days. The listed sowing rate is approximately 25 seeds per plant.

Transplanting and care

Grow seedlings in a bright location until they reach about 4 inches tall. Gradually harden them off before transplanting outdoors, spacing plants approximately 10 inches apart. Maintain moist to wet soil and monitor spreading where a compact planting is desired.
