Fine-Textured Greenery for Small-Space Displays

Pilea microphylla, commonly called artillery plant or artillery fern, brings delicate-looking green foliage to indoor containers, fairy gardens, and suitable terrarium displays. Despite its fern-like appearance and common name, it is a flowering plant, not a true fern.

Set a container in bright, indirect light to add a soft green accent to a desk or plant shelf. Combine it with plants that enjoy similar warmth and moisture for a miniature garden you can enjoy up close.

What You Are Ordering

  • Product: Live Pilea microphylla plants, not seeds.
  • Pack options: Choose 3 or 10 plants from the available sizes.
  • Common names: Artillery plant and artillery fern.
  • Main feature: Fine-textured green foliage.
  • Growing uses: Houseplant containers, fairy gardens, and suitably ventilated terrariums.

Light and Location

Provide bright, indirect light or a sheltered, partly shaded outdoor position during warm weather. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can stress the foliage. Keep indoor plants away from cold drafts.

Soil and Watering

  • Use a loose, fertile, well-draining potting mix.
  • Choose containers with drainage holes whenever practical.
  • Check the soil regularly and water when the surface begins to dry, rather than following a fixed calendar.
  • Keep the root zone lightly moist, not saturated. Do not allow pots to stand in water.
  • In terrariums, water sparingly and monitor moisture carefully because enclosed displays dry more slowly.

Temperature and Feeding

This tropical perennial prefers warm, humid conditions, generally around 65–85°F. It is not a cold-hardy outdoor perennial. The existing growing guidance lists USDA zones 11–12 for year-round outdoor growing; elsewhere, grow it indoors or as a warm-season foliage plant and protect it from cold.

During active growth, feed lightly with a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to its label. Avoid overfeeding, particularly when growth slows.

After Arrival

Unpack promptly, check soil moisture, and place plants in gentle indirect light while they adjust. Gradually introduce them to their intended growing location. Plant size and appearance vary with season and growing conditions.

For ornamental growing: Plants are not sold as food. Keep them away from children or pets that may chew foliage, and do not assume a plant is edible based on its common name.
