Native to California and Oregon, Baby Blue Eyes is an ideal choice for mass plantings, containers, and borders. While it dislikes transplanting and excessive heat, it is highly attractive to butterflies and bees. This low-growing flower thrives in partial shade and cooler temperatures.
To thrive, it needs to be planted in moist soil and a shady area that still receives some sunlight, such as the northern side of a building or structure. This versatile flower can also be started indoors for early blooms.
Plant Baby Blue Eyes in fall in zones 7-10 for early spring color. An annual flower, it quickly grows from seeds and thrives in full sun to partial shade, well-draining, moist soil. It's a prolific bloomer with simple, true blue flowers and a white center. In USDA zones 3-9, it's a colorful addition to any garden. It re-seeds itself for a beautiful display the following spring.
Sowing: Sow the Nemophila Menziesii seeds in early spring and lightly press them into the soil surface, as they require light to germinate. Keep the soil moist until germination, which usually takes 10-20 days. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin or transplant them to allow for more space. For an earlier planting, start the seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost and then transplant them outdoors.
Growing: Keep young plants watered until established; mature plants tolerate drought, benefit from occasional watering. Fast-growing, dies with first frost, may reseed.
