Growing Aquadulce Fava Bean Cover Crop Garden Seeds
About Aquadulce Fava Bean Cover Crop Garden Seeds
Aquadulce fava beans are a cool weather crop that can be broadcasted in spring or fall. For traditional planting, sow 1-2 seeds 1" deep and 4-6" apart in rich, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Soak the seeds overnight for faster germination. Thin to 1 plant every 8-10" once the second set of leaves appear. Inoculate with Rhizobium bacteria during planting. This heirloom variety may be vulnerable to some diseases.
Aquadulce Fava Bean Benefits
Non-GMO Vicia faba is a popular cover crop traditionally sown in the fall to replenish nitrogen content in garden soil. Whether grown between seasons or alongside a crop as a nitrogen-boosting companion plant, heirloom fava bean seeds can be sown nearly any time of the year. To eat fava beans, shell the entire pod and cook the beans. Fresh fava beans can be stored with oil in the freezer, and keep dried bean safely in a cool dark spot. Fall planted fava beans will mature quickly to supplement depleted nitrogen, but will not fruit until 8-9 months after garden sowing.

Consider using a bean seed inoculant to improve growth and nitrogen-fixing ability of favas.Plants tilled into the soil before seed is set can decompose in two weeks, allowing the area to be replanted. Woody plants may take 4 to 6 weeks to decompose, delaying the next crop.If aphids show up, control with sprays of insecticidal soap or pyrethrin.
CULTURE:
Unlike most beans, fava beans prefer cool weather and are best planted at the same times as peas. Sow 1" deep 4-6" apart, in rows 18-36" apart. Where winter lows stay above 10°F (-12°C) sow in September. Inoculants can increase yields. Pick for green shelling when beans are plump inside the large pods.
