Size: 2 bulbs

Add graceful, long-lasting flowers to your patio or garden with ‘Schwarzwalder’ calla lily bulbs. Grow them in pots, planters, or well-drained beds, then bring a few stems indoors for elegant bouquets. Decorative foliage keeps the planting attractive while the plants are actively growing.

What You Receive

Choose 2 or 3 calla lily bulbs, supplied as planting tubers rather than established potted plants. Select your preferred quantity from the available options. There is no separate color selection on this listing.

Growing Highlights

  • Variety: ‘Schwarzwalder’ calla lily.
  • Uses: Patio pots, planters, garden beds, and cut flowers.
  • Light: Full sun to bright, filtered light, with shelter from intense sun where needed.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil or potting mix.
  • Moisture: Slightly moist during active growth, never waterlogged.
  • Planting season: Spring, once frost danger has passed and the soil is warm.

Planting in Garden Beds

Choose a site where water drains freely after rain. Improve poorly structured soil with suitable organic matter or use a raised bed rather than planting where water collects.

Position tubers with the growing points, or “eyes,” facing upward. Follow the planting depth and spacing supplied with your bulbs; do not leave tubers exposed above the soil. Water to settle the soil, then keep it lightly moist without saturating it. Roots and shoots develop as conditions warm, and emergence time varies.

Growing in Pots and Planters

Choose a container with ample drainage holes and enough space for the tubers to grow. Fill with a quality, well-draining potting mix and plant with eyes facing upward, following the supplied depth and spacing instructions.

Place the container in a bright location and protect from frost. Tubers can be started in pots indoors while outdoor conditions are still cold, then gradually acclimated before moving outside. Check moisture regularly during hot or windy weather and empty water-filled saucers. If combining with other plants, choose companions with similar light and watering needs.

Care During Growth and Flowering

Water as needed to keep the growing medium slightly damp, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid both standing water and prolonged drying during active growth. Feed if needed with a fertilizer suitable for flowering container plants, following its label.

Flowering depends on planting time, temperature, and growing conditions rather than a guaranteed calendar date. Cut flowers for arrangements while plants are blooming, leaving healthy foliage in place.

After Flowering and Winter Care

Leave green leaves intact after flowering so they can replenish the tubers. Remove foliage once it has yellowed naturally and reduce watering as plants enter dormancy.

In cold climates, lift tubers before a hard freeze or move containers to a frost-free location. Let lifted tubers surface-dry in an airy, sheltered place, then store in a cool, dry, frost-free spot in paper bags or ventilated boxes with dry packing material. Check occasionally for rot or shriveling. Resume planting when warm growing conditions return.

Plant Safety

For ornamental use only. Calla lilies are harmful if eaten and can irritate the mouth and skin. Keep bulbs and plants away from children and pets, and wear gloves when handling if your skin is sensitive.
