Anemone hupehensis: 10 Seeds

Known as windflower or Japanese thimbleweed,(Anemone hupehensis) Japanese anemone is a low-maintenance perennial with branching stems and colorful blooms. The flowers attract pollinators and make great cut flowers.

This species is commonly found in perennial borders, cottage, or woodland gardens, and is particularly useful in mass plantings. It has a tendency to spread through its underground rhizomes, but can be managed by removing any new sprouts.

How to Grow Japanese Anemones From Seed

.Plant Japanese anemones in a spacious area for optimal growth. Despite being slightly invasive, their attractiveness and usefulness in the garden surpass this issue. 'Hadspen Abundance' is a large plant with green leaves and strong stems that support attractive pink flowers with yellow centers in the fall.
During autumn, compact seed compost into small pots or modules and thoroughly water until saturated. Place a few seeds in each container, covering with 1mm compost. Seal the containers in plastic bags and maintain a temperature of 60-65F/15-18C for two weeks, misting as needed. Afterward, move the pots to a cooler temperature of 35-40F/1.5-4.5C for six weeks, then keep them in darkness at 60-65F/15-18C. Germination should occur within 1-3 months. Carefully transplant the seedlings into individual pots without disturbing the roots. Continue growing indoors until ready to acclimatize and plant in their final location.

Start indoors

To start seeds indoors, they should be planted four to six weeks before the last frost, so plants will be ready for transplanting in the spring. The small plants can be transplanted outdoors when daytime temperatures are reliably in the upper 50-degree Fahrenheit range.

  1. Fill a seed starting tray with growing mix and water until the mixture is moist but not standing in water.
  2. Sprinkle Japanese anemone seed on top of the growing mix, sprinkle a thin layer of the seed starting mix on top of the seeds, and press the soil down gently with your hand.
  3. Place the seeds under a grow light and keep the tray at a temperature of 50 degrees until they germinate in about 20 to 30 days.
  4. Thin the plants when the seedlings are about two inches high and continue growing under the grow lights.
  5. Transplant the seedlings into 2- to 3-inch pots and begin to harden off the seedlings when daytime temperatures are in the upper 40s. Bring the plants indoors at night or anytime frost threatens.
  6. Plant in the garden 24 inches apart when temperatures are reliably in the 50s.
