Yu Choy Sum Seeds – Brassica rapa | Early Green Flowering Brassica | Baby Yu Choy

Yu Choy Sum (Early Green) (Brassica rapa var. parachinensis) is a high-quality, early-maturing flowering brassica developed specifically for growing baby Yu Choy and Yu Choy Miao — the tender young shoots prized across Cantonese cuisine. Shorter and thicker than standard choy sum, with shiny green leaves and short, sturdy stems, this early variety matures in just 30–40 days and is tolerant to Downy Mildew. Harvest as Yu Choy (stems and leaves before budding) or as Yu Choy Sum (stems, leaves, and tender flower buds). After the first harvest, the plant branches freely for an extended continuous harvest.

A fast-growing, productive cool-season annual grown across China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean. Known by many regional names — see the full list below.

Variety Details

  • Botanical Name: Brassica rapa var. parachinensis
  • Type: Early-maturing flowering brassica — baby Yu Choy / Yu Choy Miao type
  • Stem: Short, thick, sturdy with shiny dark green leaves
  • Days to maturity: 30–40 days (faster than standard late-green varieties)
  • Disease tolerance: Downy Mildew tolerant
  • Planting season: Late spring; late summer/fall

Yu Choy vs. Yu Choy Sum

  • Yu Choy (you cai): Harvest stems and leaves before flower buds appear — larger, more substantial stems
  • Yu Choy Sum (choy sum): Harvest stems, leaves, and tender flower buds just before they open — the buds are the prized, sweet element of the dish

Culinary Uses

  • Classic Cantonese preparation: Blanch or steam lightly and dress with oyster sauce and sesame oil
  • Stir-fried with garlic and ginger — standard preparation across southern Chinese home cooking
  • Cantonese soups, clear broths, and dim sum side dishes
  • Sautéed with fermented tofu, black bean sauce, or XO sauce
  • Added whole to hot pot and noodle soups
  • Baby shoots (Yu Choy Miao) — especially tender; prized in high-end Cantonese restaurants as a seasonal delicacy

Planting Guide

  • Season: Late spring or late summer/early fall. Prefers cool temperatures; sensitive to temperatures below 50–55°F (may bolt prematurely).
  • Soil: Fertile, well-draining. Keep consistently moist.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilize regularly for vigorous stem and leaf growth.
  • Optimal temperature: 60–80°F.

Harvesting

  • Harvest the main stalk when 10–14 inches tall and just before the flower buds open.
  • After the first cut, the plant branches freely for multiple side-shoot harvests — harvest continuously throughout the season.
  • Harvest in the morning for best moisture and texture.
