Solenostemon scutellarioides 'Wizard Pineapple' is one of the most talked-about coleus varieties for shade gardens — and for good reason. The large, serrated leaves emerge in a vivid chartreuse-lime with intricate dark maroon veining that gives the foliage an almost reptilian, mosaic texture. Think crocodile skin in tropical garden colors. Plants grow to a uniform 12–14 inches, are compact and tightly leaved, and perform spectacularly in containers, hanging baskets, and shady borders. Mass planted, they create extraordinary sweeps of color that hold all summer without fading.
Foliage Highlights
- Vivid chartreuse-lime leaves with intricate dark maroon veining
- Mosaic, reptilian texture — striking and distinctive up close
- Compact habit: 12–14 inches tall, uniform and tightly leaved
- Exceptional in containers, hanging baskets, mass planting, and border edges
- Blooms attract hummingbirds and butterflies if left unpinched
Growing Guide
Starting from seed: Surface sow on moist seed-starting mix — do not cover seeds; they need light to germinate. Keep at 70–75°F; germination in 10–14 days. Maintain consistent moisture throughout.
Transplanting: Move seedlings outdoors after all frost danger has passed. Space 6–9 inches apart.
Site: Partial shade to full shade. Coleus performs well indoors on a bright windowsill and outdoors in shaded beds, patios, and container arrangements. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can bleach the foliage.
Soil: Moist, rich, well-drained soil; pH 5.6–7.5.
Pinching flowers: Remove flower buds as they form to keep energy directed into foliage production and plant health. Leave some flowers if attracting pollinators is a priority.
