Planting and outdoor care

Choose a sheltered, shaded location protected from strong afternoon sun. Incorporate compost into the planting area to improve soil structure, and plant at the same depth as the existing root ball. Water thoroughly after planting.

• Keep soil evenly moist, especially while the plant establishes, but avoid saturated conditions.
• Check soil moisture regularly and adjust watering to rainfall, temperature, and drainage rather than following a fixed schedule.
• Apply organic mulch around the plant, keeping it away from the crown.
• Remove dead or damaged fronds in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
• If feeding, use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring according to its label directions.

Indoor and container care

Use a container with drainage holes and a moisture-retentive, freely draining potting mix. Provide bright, indirect light and keep away from harsh direct sun and drying drafts. Maintain even moisture without allowing the pot to stand in water.
