(ALLIUM hookeri var. muliense )

Ornamental onions , Small Yellow Onion Great cut-flowers for fresh or dried arrangements,

The yellow color is unique for an allium. Pair with the more common white and purple alliums to create striking color combinations. Use in rock gardens, moist meadows, sunny borders, or cottage gardens.

Allium hookeri var. muliense, commonly called Hooker's onion, has bright, yellow flowers while A. hookeri has white flowers. This variety is native to the moist, mountain meadows and forest margins of southwest Sichuan and northwest Yunnan provinces in China at elevations between 9,000 -14,000 feet. The small yellow flowers form a hemispherical to spherical flower head, 3-4" in diameter, held on stalks up to 12-24" tall. The bright green foliage emerges in the spring, with eight to nine leaves for each rhizome. The strap-like leaves, 12-20" long, more closely resemble those of a daylily than an ornamental onion.
Ornamental onions perform beautifully, blooming late spring through early summer; they add a different, spectacular or architectural dimension to the garden; many suitable for Heirloom gardens and sunny, well-drained meadow; also wonderful cut and dried flowers
How To Grow :
For container grown plants, sow flowered keeled garlic seeds in soil that is very porous. A recommended soil mixture is 1 part perlite, 1 part peat moss, and 1 part potting soil. If growing the plants outdoors, amend the soil with organic matter so that it drains well. The flowered keeled garlic plants will rot if the soil retains water. Sow the Garlic herb seeds on the soil and lightly cover with 1/8 inch of soil and keep the flower seeds moist until germination.
SOWING ADVICE: SOW SEEDS AT ANY TIME COVERING THEM WITH COMPOST OR GRIT 5MM DEEP, KEEPING THE SEED POT IN A COOL, WELL-LIT SPOT OUTDOORS. ARTIFICIAL HEAT IS NOT NEEDED AND PREVENT GERMINATION SO BE VERY PATIENT AS MANY SPECIES WILL ONLY GERMINATE IN THE SPRING AFTER CHILLING OR FREEZING IN THE MOIST SEED TRAY IN THE WINTER. GROW ON INDIVIDUAL SEEDLINGS IN SMALL POTS UNTIL OF SUFFICIENT SIZE TO BE POTTED ON OR PLANTED OUT INTO THE OPEN GROUND.
