Plant Precocious daffodil bulbs in fall to build a spring display in borders, naturalized areas, or patio containers. These perennial Narcissus bulbs bring seasonal interest to sunny or lightly shaded planting spaces and can return in later years when growing conditions and after-flowering care are suitable.
Pack options
Choose 10, 25, or 100 bulbs. One cart quantity purchases one selected pack. This listing is for bulbs to plant, not seeds, cut flowers, or flowering potted plants.
Where and when to plant
Plant in fall while the soil is workable, allowing time for roots to establish before the ground freezes. Choose a sunny or lightly shaded location with moist but freely draining soil. Avoid heavy shade and spots where water collects.
Loosen compacted soil and incorporate well-rotted compost where needed to improve soil structure. Daffodils need suitable winter chilling for normal growth and flowering; in warm-winter areas, seek local advice on suitability before planting.
Planting depth and spacing
Set bulbs with their pointed ends facing upward. Use bulb size to guide depth: a general approach is to plant at a depth approximately two to three times the bulb's height, following any directions supplied with the bulbs. The former listing suggested about 4 inches, but larger bulbs may need deeper planting.
Space bulbs roughly two bulb-widths apart in garden beds, allowing room for roots and future growth. Water after planting to settle the soil, then maintain moisture as needed without keeping the ground saturated.
Naturalizing in grass
For a less formal display, arrange bulbs in irregular groups rather than straight rows. Use a bulb planter to lift a core of turf, prepare sufficient planting depth, place the bulb upright, and replace the soil and turf.
Do not mow the foliage while it is green. Wait until leaves have yellowed and died back naturally so they can replenish the bulbs. Use the condition of the leaves rather than a fixed June or July mowing date, since timing varies by climate.
Container care
Choose a deep container with drainage holes and well-drained potting mix. Allow enough depth for roots below the bulbs and the appropriate soil covering above. Bulbs can be planted more closely for a seasonal pot display, but should not touch each other or the container sides.
Keep evenly moist during active growth and let excess water drain. Avoid standing water. In cold climates, exposed pots may need winter protection because container roots and bulbs are less insulated than those in the ground.
Feeding and after-flowering care
Remove faded flowers if seed production is not desired, but leave the green leaves intact. Do not tie, braid, or cut back healthy foliage. Allow it to yellow naturally before removing it.
Feed with a bulb fertilizer according to its label when appropriate. Deadheading can conserve energy, but it does not guarantee flowering the following year. Poor flowering can also result from insufficient light, overcrowding, planting depth, immature bulbs, or foliage being removed too soon.
Long-term care
Keep the planting well drained and avoid disturbing bulbs unnecessarily. If established clumps become crowded and flowering declines, lift and divide after the foliage has died back, then replant at an appropriate depth. Returning flowers depend on local conditions and care, not a guaranteed annual bloom schedule.
Important safety information
Daffodils are toxic if eaten, especially the bulbs. Keep bulbs and plants away from children and pets and store separately from food bulbs such as onions. Wear gloves if handling causes skin irritation. Seek medical or veterinary advice promptly if ingestion occurs.
