These tall annuals with fine, lacy, fern-like foliage and their large pure white blooms create a lovely back-drop for the entire garden. They are very easy to grow from Cosmos flower seed, and a landscape can easily be transformed into a lovely display of soft colors. The extra-large, long-lasting white blooms are excellent cut flowers as well. Cut them early in the morning just as the petals begin to unfold. Sowing: Be sure to plant your Cosmos Bipinnatus Sea Shells seeds in early spring or after the last frost, gently scattering them on top of loose soil. Maintain a mildly moist soil until germination, which typically occurs within 10-20 days with soil temperatures between 65-75 degrees F. It is possible that cooler soil temperatures may delay germination.
These seeds grow quickly in warm soil, so you can plant them before midsummer for a second batch of flowers. If your seedlings seem crowded, you can transplant them, although thinning is not necessary. For an alternative option, start your seeds indoors by sowing them on the surface of a flat about 6-8 weeks before the last frost of spring. Keep the soil evenly moist and at a temperature of 70-75 degrees F until germination, then transplant them outdoors once there is no longer a risk of frost.
Growing: -For optimal growth, regularly water these plants until they begin to bloom; they will then become highly drought tolerant. Be cautious not to over-water this flower, as it thrives in drought conditions and heat. In the event of extended drought, occasional deep watering is recommended. To encourage new growth and more blossoms, trim the plant back to 12" if blooming begins to decrease; expect new blooms in approximately 4 weeks. Tall plants may require support or staking. Allow this flower to self-seed for a new crop of flowers next year. Its sweet scent attracts birds, butterflies, and bees.
Harvesting: As an expert in the flower industry, I can inform you that the Cosmos plant produces beautiful and durable cut flowers. For optimal results, be sure to cut long stems from freshly opened blossoms and remove any foliage that may be submerged in water. With a vase life of 7-10 days, these flowers are a great option for both fresh and dried arrangements.
