Tall plants with fern-like dark green foliage dotted with tiny cream-yellow colored flowers. Use foliage for wreaths and as filler for mixed bouquets. Also known as sweet sagewort, sweet wormwood, and Chinese wormwood.
This is the main botanical ingredient in Absinthe, an alcoholic spirit that has a long and interesting history. Vincent van Gogh and Ernest Hemingway were Absinthe drinkers. The active ingredient Thujone is said to create a clear headed intoxication and is also reputed to be dangerous in excess.
SOWING: Transplant - Sow 5-6 weeks before last frost. Barely cover the seed.
Surface sow in pots indoors 4 weeks before last frost. Germination may be slow and erratic. When plants are 3” tall, transplant to 18” centers. May also be direct sown after danger of frost has passed. For best results and to avoid self-seeding, harvest prior to seed maturity.
Seed Saving
To save seed, sow plants early in spring & harvest when seeds easily rub out of seed heads. Cut seed stalks when seeds are dry, thresh by hand, dancing, or hitting seed stalk against sides of bucket. Screen to clean.
