Sweet Mignonette – Reseda odorata
The sweet fragrance of this lovely plant is a luxury in any garden. This is one of the most popular flowers that are cultivated solely for fragrance. Mignonette is a favorite for bouquets. In the garden it is used to break up undesirable color combinations. The flowers are brownish-red or white, and individually are odd in form and shape. The fragrance of Mignonette suggests many uses, for it renders any bouquet delightful. As a cut flower, some varieties last fully a week in water. Grown in pots for the sunny window, the flowers are a constant delight.

Sowing: Sow sweet mignonette seeds in late fall by pressing them onto the soil surface, as they require light to germinate. For spring planting, mix the seeds with moist sand and refrigerate for 30 days before sowing. Keep the soil lightly moist during the 7-14 day germination period. Avoid transplanting.

Growing: Promote healthy growth in seedlings by regularly watering until they are established, and also prevent weeds from taking over. Mature plants can withstand slightly dry soil, but will thrive in moist conditions and may require occasional watering during dry spells. Trim off dead flowers to extend the blooming season, and prune the plant to promote fuller growth. This variety is known to attract butterflies and deter bees, making it an ideal choice for container gardening.

Harvesting: For cut flowers, choose stems with flowers that have just opened. Strip the foliage that will fall below the water level, and place in water immediately.
