A Mediterranean Favorite for Your Garden

Grow Sweet Lupini bean seeds and discover a crop with a long history in Mediterranean gardens and kitchens. Lupinus albus produces rounded, flattened, pale yellow beans traditionally used in carefully prepared lupini snacks. This listing is for planting seeds, not ready-to-eat beans.

Plant Highlights

  • Common name: Sweet Lupini or white lupin
  • Botanical name: Lupinus albus
  • Grown for mature dry beans
  • A distinctive addition to a vegetable garden

Planting Guide

Choose loose, well-drained soil and a location with good light. In hot climates, some afternoon shade can help reduce heat stress. Avoid waterlogged ground.

  • Direct sow seeds approximately 3/4 inch deep.
  • Space rows at least 18 inches apart.
  • Thin seedlings to approximately 4–6 inches apart, retaining the strongest plants.
  • Keep the seedbed evenly moist during establishment without saturating it.

Growing and Care

Water at soil level as needed for the weather and soil conditions. Allow excess water to drain freely and avoid frequent shallow watering. Keep young plants free of competing weeds, and monitor them as pods develop.

Harvest and Seed Storage

For dry beans, let pods mature and dry on the plant when conditions allow. Harvest before pods split and release their seeds. Finish drying in a sheltered, well-ventilated place, then shell the pods. Store thoroughly dried planting seed in a labeled container in a cool, dry location.

Important Food Safety and Allergy Notes

Lupini beans can contain toxic alkaloids. The name “sweet” does not establish that a seed lot is safe to eat without appropriate preparation. Do not eat raw beans or use taste alone to judge safety. Ordinary cooking may not adequately remove these compounds; use only food-grade beans with verified preparation instructions from a reliable food-safety source.

These seeds are sold for planting. Do not eat planting seed unless the supplier explicitly confirms it is suitable for food use. Lupin can also cause allergic reactions, especially in some people with peanut allergies.
