Cuban Oregano Live Plants

Grow fresh Cuban oregano, the strongly aromatic herb also known as Spanish thyme, broadleaf thyme, Indian borage, and Mexican mint. Its thick, softly textured leaves have a bold savory fragrance suited to Caribbean, Latin American, and Asian-inspired cooking.

Plant Details

  • Botanical name: Plectranthus amboinicus
  • Product: Live starter plants
  • Also known as: Spanish thyme, broadleaf thyme, Indian borage, and Mexican mint
  • Growth habit: Fleshy, branching herb with aromatic leaves
  • Uses: Containers, herb gardens, and bright indoor growing spaces

After Arrival

Unpack the plants promptly and check the soil moisture. Let them recover in a bright, sheltered location before transplanting. Gradually increase their exposure to outdoor sun and wind over several days. Temporary wilting or minor leaf damage can occur during shipping.

Planting and Care

Plant in loose, well-drained soil or a container mix formulated for good drainage. Containers should have drainage holes. Provide bright light or partial sun, and allow the upper soil to begin drying between waterings. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.

Pinch or trim growing tips to encourage branching and maintain a compact shape. Feed lightly during active growth according to the directions on a balanced fertilizer. Growth rate and mature size vary with light, temperature, container size, and care.

Harvest and Culinary Use

Harvest individual leaves or tender stem tips as needed, leaving enough growth for the plant to recover. The flavor is concentrated, so start with a small amount and adjust to taste. Use in beans, meats, poultry, soups, stews, sauces, marinades, and seasoning blends.

Seasonal Note

Cuban oregano is frost sensitive. Move container plants into a bright, frost-free location before cold weather and reduce watering as growth slows.
